Our A2/A2 Families
During the past 16 years we have concentrated on bringing in the original Austrian Full Blood Pinzgauer. We have successfully sold exceptional breeding stock & show animals. Our records prove beef steers can yield up to 73% (take home wrapped meat) from the hook. Recently it was suggested to test semen from one of our bulls for the A2/A2 genotyping. The test was conducted at the University of California, Davis. Results came back PPB AnnaMae's Freedom carries the A2/A2 Beta Casein Gene. This is another avenue we are pursuing to promote the original Austrian Full Blood Pinzgauer.
What is the A2/A2 Beta Casein Gene? Many studies throughout Europe, Australia, and New Zealand have studied the health effects of A2/A2 milk. All animals carry 2 copies of the gene encoding beta casein with a genotype A1/A1, A1/A2 or A2/A2. Neither trait is dominant. In the breeding process, each parent can only produce one gene. A male with A2/A2 genes and a female with A2/A2 genes will always produce offspring with A2/A2 milk.If one parent with A2/A2 genes breeds another parent with A1/A2 genes, then only 50% of the offspring will have the A2/A2 genes. A2/A2 milk is about the Protein in our milk. 85-87 % of milk is water while the other 13-15% is where we find the Beta Casein Protein part. Hundreds of years ago in Europe, cattle were developed with an emphasis on milk production. Many years before that a mutation occurred in the geno track of original A2 cattle bringing about the A1 milk gene. Meanwhile, in the Tyro Valley of Austria, the Pinzgauers were being developed from 3 breeds of Bravarian cattle. Fortunately some of these cattle remained isolated from cross-breeding and kept the original A2 Gene. This also occurred on several islands and other areas in Europe. Since then it was uncovered by researchers that in these areas there were less human health problems concerning diabetes, autism, heart problems and other issues. This caused researchers to look at the diets of these people and the difference in the milk produced, namely A1 and A2.
Presently, several dairy farmers in the U.S. are attempting to convert their dairy herd to A2/A2. Many are doing so by using semen that has been tested to be A2/A2. This could take several years and a great expense in the geno testing. All females obviously would have to be tested unless the dam and sire of the off-spring were both A2/A2.
Another challenge is to find a source that could prove the meat is also healthier coming from a A2/A2 animal. Our Anne Line will definitely continue for many reasons. In the mean time the question comes to mind...If A2/A2 milk is healthier for the human will a A2/A2 calf nursing on a A2/A2 mother be a healthier more productive animal?
Information was obtained from the book titled DEVIL IN THE MILK. Illness, health and the Politics of A1 and A2 Milk. by Keith Woodford. Foreword by Thomas Cowan, MD
Up-dated happenings: Our most present endeavor is to encourage small dairy farmers to become A2/A2.
